Best of Berrien County Michigan

Every year we have a tradition of getting together with our two best couple friends and our dogs and finding a vacation rental within driving distance of Chicago. We always search Illinois and all the surrounding states but then inevitably find our favorite in Michigan. Most recently, we have found our favorites in Berrien County, a lovely lakefront County at the southwest corner of Michigan. Berrien County has a plethora of vacation rentals and unmatched attractions which I have included below in no particular order.

Lake Michigan

This first one might be obvious but Lake Michigan is definitely the main draw to visiting the area. There are numerous lovely sandy beaches along it’s shores for the perfect day out. You can add on rentals such as paddle boards or kayaks if you’re wanting more activity or just have the usual swim and sunbathe. Either way you will have a great day out along Michigan’s ocean like shores.

Galien River County Park

Looking out on the Galien River feels like looking out on the Everglades. We kept waiting for an Alligator to pop it’s head out as we walked the wooden planked pathways. They have a upper walkway where you can get the lovely views pictured above as well as a pathway down amongst the river which is also pictured. There is additional paths through the woods which were nice to get some shade on the very hot day we visited. It’s a fairly small park, I think we covered it in about an hour.

Wineries

We are big fans of going for wine tastings and Berrien County has a whole trail of Wineries to visit. There is a Winery style for every Wine fan, some elegant, while others more low-key some classic still others with a modern twist. Each Winery offers tastings for around $5-$12 depending on the location which allows you to taste several different of their local wines. Or you can always grab a glass or bottle to enjoy at home or onsite. Our absolute favorite non-sponsored pick is St. Julians tasting room in Union Pier. It has the largest selection of wines we loved and the loveliest staff. Plus they are right next door to Round Barn’s tasting room for a double hitter. Follow the link to the trail here.

Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park is located along the shoreline. It has three adventures in one through it’s beach, dunes and wooded areas. There is a $5 per vehicle cost for entry and plenty of parking. Breweries

In addition to the wine trail, there are plenty Breweries that have also cropped up in the area. They are less likely to offer tastings but offer more of a restaurant or pub setting to enjoy their local brews. For example Beer Church Brewing Company which we visited is located in a repurposed church building where they serve their beers, food and mixed drinks.

Oink’s Dutch Treat Ice Cream Shop

There is no better way to close out a summer afternoon (or any afternoon really) than with some locally made ice cream. Oink’s is a classic ice cream shop with a silly twist. They have a serious pig obsession to go with their many flavors and the shop is covered. You can find them in New Buffalo , just be sure to bring cash.

We have found that the best of Berrien County Michigan is that it is the perfect place to relax and reconnect with good friends. We always leave with nothing but lovely memories and are planning our next visit before our current one has even finished.
