Visiting Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park located, along the Lake Michigan shoreline has a little something for everyone when it comes to outdoor recreation. With its beach, dunes and forest it is three adventures in one. There is a $5 per vehicle cost for entry and plenty of parking. We had a wonderful time checking out all the park had to offer with our dogs.

The Beach

Warren Dunes State Park has some beautiful sandy beach space right on Lake Michigan.  The parking is right along the beach as well as having bathroom facilities there onsite. If you are there on a holiday prepare for the fact that it will be pretty packed. There was a particularly large line for the restrooms. Luckily, the state park has lots of space so while you will see plenty of others you won’t feel crowded outside of the beach. Otherwise, it is a spacious and clean Lake Michigan Beach.

The Dunes

Warren Dunes State Park is as it’s name would suggest, most known for it’s dunes. According to the Michigan DNR website they rise 260 feet above Lake Michigan. If you can make the trek up,  they offer some stellar views of the Lake. Hiking up to the top in the sand takes quite a bit of effort, especially on a hot day. Pack your water and some good hiking shoes if you are going to make your way up for some of those amazing views.

The Woods

Warren Dunes state Park has some lovely hiking routes through the woods. It was particularly nice to get some of the shade the trees provided on the hot and sunny day. The paths are not mapped or for that matter clearly marked but to us that just adds to the adventure. Walking these paths would not be for those with small children or otherwise less physically abled persons. The paths involve walking through creeks and underbrush and at one point climbing up a ravine although we may have gotten off the path at that point. Like I said the paths aren’t clearly marked so it was hard to know. Regardless, an excellent hiking adventure was had by all.

ravines, splashed through creeks and wandered through the trees.

Warren Dunes was the perfect spot for a summer adventure for us and our dogs. We enjoyed exploring the beach, woods and dunes. Click Here for more information from the Michigan DNR website to plan your visit.
