Our Scariest Travel Stories

Halloween is Lindsey’s favorite Holiday. She goes all out with decorating the house, hosting party and developing costumes. We also enjoy many Halloween themed activities and adventures each October season. Since this week’s post landed on Halloween we were inspired to compile some of our “scariest” travel memories in honor of our favorite spooky holiday

Ryan and Lindsey in California

Our Road Trip to California was ripe with scares for some reason.  As we came into Los Angeles We were completing a long drive so were very tired and Lindsey had actually fallen asleep in the passenger seat which lets be honest is a common occurrence. We pull up to this motel that we had found in our GPS and Ryan expresses his concern due to the sketchiness of this place but Lindsey, just walking up and wanting somewhere to sleep ASAP disregards his comments and bounces up to the desk person to book us in. We go to our room and it is old , dark, dirty and well ….scary. We throw around the idea of putting something down and just sleeping on top of the bed but ultimately just can’t bear it and determine even we take a loss on this booking that we are not staying here. As we leave our room to talk to the desk person again the full impact of where we are sets in as the full-time residents milling around the parking lot at this time of night to stare at us.  Very Luckily Ryan is able to demand our money back due to the condition of the room and we found a new place but this was a pretty scary and possibly dangerous part of our trip that we laugh about now.

Our Trip to Los Angeles proved to be a fairly adrenaline filled one. We had stopped to get gas when all of the sudden a ton of cop cars zoom by with their lights on. Ryan, in all his genius decides to follow the cars to see what was going on despite Lindsey’s protests. At some point we end up in a residential area which is blocked off and a police officer advises us that we cannot go any further down the road as there is an armed gunman on the loose that they are searching for. Needless to say we got out of there fast.

Our final California road trip scare was in San Francisco. We also arrived into town at night on San Fransisco’s notoriously steep and twisty streets. Ryan turns a corner and starts us going down the wrong way on a one way street. Luckily we noticed immediately and he got turned around. In his defense he was fairly fresh from the homeland where driving occurs on the opposite side of the road. We were safely back on the right side the road and ended the night finding an adorable fifties themed diner though so all is well that ends well.

Ghosts in Door County, Wisconsin

While we were visiting Door County, WI Ryan and I decided to do a haunted tour at the Alexander Noble House Museum . These tours occur only after dark and focus more on the ghostly history of the home than  tours during the day. Though we don’t really believe in ghosts it was a fun and creepy tour. At one point Lindsey even swears she felt something touch her when no one was near. Although in retrospect that is just as likely to be Ryan as a ghost. If you are looking to check out this haunted Door County attraction I have linked to their website here.

Zombies in Minneapolis, Minnesota

On our most recent trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota we were attending Lindsey’s Cousin’s wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception in the city hall. Afterwards we along with various other family members walked back to our hotel which was very close. Along the way we saw dozens and dozens of people dressed up as zombies walking the streets, on the train even in our hotel lobby. They were all a part of Minneapolis’s annual Zombie Pub Crawl which according to the website holds the Guinness world record for the largest gathering of zombies. It was quite a sight and a fun way to end the night. You never know what you will run into on your travels, which is all part of the fun.
