Beatlemania Trip to Liverpool, England

As the hometown of the Fab Four, Liverpool is a city with unprecedented access for the Beatles enthusiast. The infamous group met as teenagers in their hometown of Liverpool and the rest as they say is history. Due to their ‘Scouse’ roots, Liverpool has a great number of Beatles tourism spots.  We explored them for ourselves on my very first trip to visit Ryan’s beloved hometown and I was totally starstruck.  Beatles fans out there can use our post for planning your very own Beatles Liverpool experience.

The Beatles Story Museum

Your first stop on a Liverpool Beatles tour should definitely be the The Beatles Story Exhibition. It is located in the Albert Docks, which for the record is a beautiful spot in it’s own right with several other excellent attractions, shops and restaurants worth checking out.  The museum goes through their whole timeline with numerous artifacts and of course much of their music playing. There is a level of cheesyness going on that makes you wonder why they haven’d done more with it but overall it’s an informative and charming museum for the  average tourist or Beatles superfan alike.

Strawberry Fields

Visiting Strawberry Fields

According to Strawberry Field’s Wikipedia page, the Beatles iconic song, like many, was written by  both John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was reportedly inspired by Lennon’s memories of playing in the garden of Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army children’s home near where he grew up in Liverpool.  John reportedly used to sneak in and hide in the  tall grass which is what you would have to do as well to get into the field 1 . We, however, chose to just check it out from the fence and take a few photos. It is rather unfortunate that many of it’s previous visitors have written all over it but is still compelling  to visit.

Eleanor Rigby

Eleanor Rigby Grave

McCartney reportedly recalled in 1984, when asked about the Song Eleanor Rigby, ” ‘I just liked the name. I was looking for a name that sounded natural. ‘Eleanor Rigby’ sounded natural.’  However, it has been pointed out that the graveyard of St Peter’s Church in Liverpool, where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met, contains the gravestone of an individual called Eleanor Rigby. McCartney conceded he may have been subconsciously influenced by the name on the gravestone 2.” This gravestone, as shown above, can be visited as we did. It is a more macabre but still intriguing Beatles site to check out.

Penny Lane

Visiting Penny Lane

Penny Lane, an iconic Beatles tune,  is also a real Street in Liverpool. If you are familiar with the song, which refers to a Barber shop with photographs, you will be excited to find out that this shop is  still running and can be visited as well, right on Penny Lane.  Step directly into their music and get a feel for what inspired it, with a walk down this infamous street.

Beatles Childhood Homes

Visiting Sir Paul McCartney’s Childhood Home

Being the place where the Fab Four grew up, you can also go and see the homes where John Lennon and Sir Paul Mcartney lived as children. We only got a chance to go takes pictures outside on this visit but it is on our bucket list to go for the inside tours on our next trip home. You can book tickets through the National Trust Website under Beatles Childhood Homes. Ringo Starr and George Harrison’s childhood homes are currently privately owned by the same investor but hopefully some day they will be opened to the public as well.

The Cavern Club

Visiting the Cavern Club

The Cavern Club, at 10 Mathew Street, in Liverpool was the venue where the Beatles  popularity started. The original Beatles members were discovered here by their manager Brian Epstein. The club changed hands several more times before eventually being demolished to allow construction of an underground railway ventilation duct, before being used as a car park. A replica of the club was built on “75 per cent of the original site” in 1984, built with 15,000 bricks retrieved from the original club site 3. You can visit the new club which is a fully operational bar. We popped in for a drink during our trip and stayed for the John Lennon look-a-like performer.

There are also a multitude of statues in Liverpool that pay homage to the Fab Four. We have listed them for you below.

  • Beatles statues by the Liver building
  • Give Peace a Chance John Lennon monument  in L1
  • Eleanor Rigby Statue “dedicated to all the lonely people” on Stanley Street
  • John Lennon Statue outside the Cavern Club
  • Yellow Submarine at John Lennon Airport
  • Hard Days Night Hotel Facade

We were fortunate enough to have use of Ryan’s car and British license to get us to all of these locations. Given that many will be coming from out of town or country to see the sites which can be a bit off the beaten path we thought it worth noting that there are taxi and bus tours that can bring you to many of these sights. Either way you  choose, you will get the full Beatles fan experience on your visit to Liverpool, England.
