Visiting Wales Beaumaris Castle

Beaumaris Castle is a beautiful 13th century relic we explored in Northern Wales. It really is too bad that King Edward the first didn’t get a chance to complete it. Although given he forcibly moved an entire community in order to build it I suppose he didn’t really deserve to. What we have been left now, are beautiful ancient castle ruins.

Getting There

My husband took me to see Beaumaris Castle from his hometown of Liverpool when I was visiting him there. We drove through the Queensway tunnel under the river Mersey. Once into Wales we drive through the welsh countryside. I loved how it was exactly how I would have expected, with green pastures and lots of sheep. Also amusing were the completely ridiculously long and for me completely unpronounceable Welsh town names. We were there on a week day so it was pretty quiet and we just bought our tickets when we got there. If you wanted to book them online. I’ve included the link Here.

Exploring the Castle

Once inside, although you are still technically outside as it mostly has no roof, it is a self-guided tour. We were essentially alone the whole time due to how quiet it was there on a week day. We felt a little like Indiana Jones exploring some ancient ruins. As an American I don’t have frequent access to things so old which makes it particularly special when I get to see it. Along with exploring on the ground you can take the steps up to the top. There were pretty views of the mountains and the surrounding farmland. Definite photo opportunities throughout.

Beau’s Tea Shop

After your visit to Beaumaris Castle I recommend you continue to drive or walk down Castle Street to the local shops.  We enjoyed in particular a stop at Beau’s Tea Shop. I thought it was so cute inside. A classic little Welsh tea shop. I so wanted to bring home one of the beautiful tea sets they were selling and had arranged throughout the shop. Unfortunately, that would not have likely made it back well on my flight back to the U.S.A.  We had tea and scones in the proper fashion. It was quaint and the perfect spot to go after touring the castle.
